Heat Stress Prevention

Heat illness can develop quickly when employees work in hot environments, perform heavy labor, or wear PPE that traps heat. Prevention starts with water, rest, shade, acclimatization, and early reporting. Warning signs include dizziness, headache, cramps, confusion, heavy sweating, or hot dry skin. Supervisors should not wait for a worker to “push through.” Early action prevents medical emergencies.

Discussion questions

  1. Where could this hazard show up in our area today?
  2. What control do we need to verify before work starts?
  3. What should be reported immediately?
